No fewer than 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight hurt in train derailment in Mexico.

A tragic train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and execution of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” declared the national leader.

The official reported that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Flagship Project of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone development scheme of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the previous year. This rail line was a hallmark of his government's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were built at an accelerated pace, defying predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had also fueled significant concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an prior collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the aftermath of the disaster, the chief of a primary political opposition demanded an urgent pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."

In reaction, the national leader asserted that the train had been operating in complete accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the construction and running of these national undertakings.
