Patients Stopping Slimming Jabs Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that patients who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese individuals frequently drop a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users purchasing such treatments need to be aware of the risk of fast weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain means a return to starting weight in about a year and a half.

Comparing Therapies

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of the injectable medications with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally see a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the amplified weight return.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Stopping of this medication results in hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Disease?

Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.

"It felt as if something that goes on and you become ravenous," described one woman.

This difficulty is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.

Growing Interest

Figures show that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is greater among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
